Another titan of Western Massachusetts chess has passed away: my brother. He dominated the tournament scene in the ‘60s and into the ‘80s, often trading off trophy years with Dave Lees. And he was our dad’s main chess partner. Johnny had cheated death countless times over the years, surviving a stint in the Korean War, battling diabetes, slipping in and out of comas. At 80 years old, his body finally gave out.
His last published USCF rating is 2096. http://www.uschess.org/msa/MbrDtlMain.php?10001862
